Hey guys, it’s Kushagra. Welcome to Atlasmoth's “FOCUS: 5“ edition.
Okay, so while I was scrolling around (yeah, the endless search for what to write this week, lol), I noticed a bunch of pros talking about how to get more users for your B2C—like, fast.
But then it hit me: Why chase new users if you’re leaking old ones? Fixing why people leave is way smarter than just finding new ways to grab attention.
So in this edition, we’re diving into what not to do if you don’t wanna lose users. Let’s break it down, make it easy, and save those users. Ready? Let’s go!
Dark tricks: Short wins, long loss
Ever felt like your app ghosted you? Let’s fix that!
Dark patterns are like inviting someone to a party and charging for snacks—totally uncool. Users expect a smooth experience, not surprise fees or tricky options.
Instead of building trust, these sneaky moves push people away. Want loyal users? Keep it transparent and ditch the tricks!
Ever been tricked by an app? Ugh, same. First time, it's like, "Wait, what?" Second time, I’m like, "Wow, okay." Third time? Bye. ✌️
Stat drop: 95% of users who experience “dark patterns” like hidden fees or tricky opt-outs say they’d never return to that brand again.
And with 70% of users leaving a site due to frustration, trust becomes priceless.

Stats of dark pattern
Think about Uber. They used to have surge pricing that caught people off guard, and users started losing trust. Now?
They’ve had to adjust because that kind of trick cost them customer loyalty. The lesson here?
Be real with your users.
Dark patterns in UX deceive users into actions they didn’t intend, leading to frustration and distrust.
While they may bring quick wins, they sacrifice long-term loyalty.
Ethical design fosters trust by prioritizing transparency and user control.
What’s the most frustrating app experience you’ve had? |
How to?
1. Trust over tricks: Gamification should motivate, not deceive. Avoid dark patterns like forced actions or hidden fees, as they erode user trust.
2. Transparency matters: Keep goals and rewards clear. Misleading users with tricky terms or hidden options damages the experience.
3. Focus on loyalty: Gamification drives lasting engagement, while dark patterns may bring quick wins but cost long-term trust and retention.
Trust > tricks, every time.
Trends fade, needs stay
We all love trends. TikTok blows up, and everyone wants to copy. But just ‘cause something’s hot doesn’t mean it works for your users
Fact drop: 39% of users say they’ve quit using apps because of design changes they didn’t like or understand.
Trends are fun, but if they confuse people, you’re just creating problems.
Snapchat is a classic example. They jumped on the AR filters trend, but when they focused too much on that and ignored user needs, they took a hit.

AR filters
Users want functions, not just fun.
Ask yourself, “Will this trend still make sense for us in a year?”
Stick to what helps your users—those choices age well.
How to approach that design-wise:
1. User research first: Understand your audience's needs through surveys and usability testing before adopting trends.
2. Prioritize usability: Focus on functionality over flash; ensure trendy elements enhance the user experience.
3. Iterate and gather feedback: Gradually introduce changes and refine them based on user feedback to maintain relevance.

Tiny tweaks, big wins
Big stuff is cool, but it’s the small things that really keep users happy.
Do you know those micro-interactions? They matter more than you think.
Fact drop: 88% of users say they’re less likely to return to a site after a bad user experience, and a lot of that has to do with tiny things like how smooth an interaction feels or what shows up when they’re stuck.
Small choices, like how Instagram’s “double-tap to like” feels so seamless, have a huge impact. It’s those little moments that build long-term love.

Double tap feature
And let’s not forget empty states—what users see when there’s no data. Those screens can either guide your users or leave them lost. Small tweaks can have big payoffs, so don’t sleep on them!
Actionable Tip: Conduct a micro-interaction audit on your design.
Identify areas where small tweaks can enhance user flow, like adding subtle animations, providing helpful tooltips, or improving feedback on actions.
Small adjustments can lead to big payoffs, so don’t sleep on them!
Just like fashion, app trends come and go—don’t be the one stuck in bell-bottoms! From flashy features to minimalism, trends shift quickly, but the secret to staying relevant is in the details.
A smooth swipe, a clever animation, or a well-placed tooltip can make or break user engagement. Keep your designs fresh by focusing on those subtle touches that build long-term loyalty.
My hot take:
It’s not the big splash that counts. It’s the small drips that add up. Stats don’t lie—trust is key, trends can hurt if done wrong, and tiny tweaks make users happy.
Keep trust. Skip trends. Show love to the small stuff. If you get those right, your users? They’ll stick like glue. 💯
One big takeaway: Don’t trick. Don’t chase hype. Love the small things. That’s how you keep your real ones.
And there it is. Keeping users isn’t hard if you just play it real. See you next time!
